The CANZ Nelson Composers Workshop: Inside the Incubator
Since 1982, the Composers Association of New Zealand Nelson Composers Workshop has been an important annual gathering of emerging New Zealand composers. Over four days, participating composers work with senior, tutor composers and top performers of new music to prepare compositions for performance to an audience of their peers. The Workshop represents an important professional development opportunity for incipient New Zealand composers, but is also thought to be largely responsible for the fostering and maintenance of collegiality in the New Zealand composition community. This 42 minute documentary follows the experiences of two young composers at the 2008 Workshop, with interviews with some of New Zealand’s finest established composers and insights into how this little recognised corner of the art-making world operates and brings on new talent.
