During my time at DIGITAL KITCHEN as an intern, I was asked to create a personal project of my choice. The content, approach, creative, tools, style etc. were all up to me and basically I would get out of the project what I put into it. For those who know me well, or even briefly know that I am a diehard Canadian born hockey fan (Canucks). I decided to use this as the subject matter and wanted to get the opinions of some of my fellow American creatives on the sport of hockey which they may or may not know anything about. I interviewed a bunch and then cut the most unique candid answers together with the intention of bringing the piece into flash and animate over. This is a technique I had yet to try my hand at so I applied myself and after 1407 individually animated frames it was done! ‘Man O War’ (Natural History Episode 24) In this special installment of our Natural History film series, Geologist (of Animal Collective) soundtracks a macroscopic view of a Portuguese man-o-war’s beautiful, yet highly venomous tentacles. The man-o-war is often mistaken as a jellyfish, but this is not the case. It does not swim, but is instead propelled by the winds, tides and currents across the ocean’s surface. In fact, a man-o-war is not even a single organism, but an entire colony of organisms called siphonophores, that live together as a singular unit. They are found floating across all of the world’s tropical and subtropical oceans. Last year, our clip was speed, funny and lot of detail: so we wanted the ’11 one more sweet and peaceful, principaly with timelapses. So, this video is our real first with several timelapses, and to try our new equipment: a canon 5D and a pan motor head.
